Warriors Rumors: Anthony Davis, Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, DeMar DeRozan

The Warriors didn’t just pursue LeBron James this summer. They apparently explored major trades that might have helped convince him to come.

According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, Golden State contacted the Wizards about Anthony Davis, believing that acquiring James’ former Lakers teammate could improve its chances of landing LeBron.

Those discussions didn’t get far. A Warriors source characterized Washington’s asking price as “unreasonable,” per Siegel, and talks never advanced beyond the initial contact.

Golden State also checked with Boston on Jaylen Brown before the Celtics ultimately traded him to Philadelphia. The Celtics reportedly had no interest in what the Warriors could offer and declined to engage.

Siegel reports that Golden State was even willing to discuss Jimmy Butler, whom the organization otherwise preferred to keep, along with draft capital in a potential deal for Davis or Brown.

James did have “genuine interest” in playing with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, per Siegel. But by the first week of Summer League, there was a growing belief that LeBron would choose an Eastern Conference team.

The Warriors’ roster apparently worked against them. Curry remains an elite scorer, but James reportedly had concerns about the lack of dependable offense around him and didn’t want to wait for Butler to return from his torn ACL. James, of course, eventually chose Philadelphia.

Curry, Green decisions coming

Now Golden State can turn its attention back to Curry and Green.

Curry becomes extension-eligible Aug. 6, and Siegel reports the franchise is prepared to give its longtime star essentially “whatever deal he wants.” That could mean a one- or two-year extension, with Curry having considerable control over the terms.

Green also remains expected to return after declining his $27.7 million player option. He could simply re-sign for one year at that same figure or agree to a multiyear contract that aligns his future with Curry and coach Steve Kerr.

Warriors still looking for help

The Warriors also have mutual interest with Gary Payton II on a veteran’s minimum contract, according to Siegel.

They’ve contacted representatives for DeMar DeRozan as well, though that appears more difficult. DeRozan has other suitors capable of offering more than the minimum, giving him little reason to accept Golden State’s price at the moment.

One name that apparently can be crossed off the list is Michael Porter Jr. Golden State explored a trade for the Nets forward previously, but Siegel reports the Warriors have since “moved on.”

So LeBron is gone, Davis and Brown didn’t materialize, and Porter is apparently no longer a target.

The Warriors are still looking. The question is whether there’s another significant move out there to make.
