Russell Westbrook on remaining unsigned: ‘I don’t think about it’

Russell Westbrook remains one of the biggest names left on the NBA free-agent market. He doesn’t sound particularly concerned about it.

Westbrook was asked by CNN about his future and said he’s basically taking things as they come.

“I don’t think about it honestly,” Westbrook said. “I love playing basketball and if it happens, it works and that’s my plan.”

Westbrook, 37, remains unsigned more than a month into free agency after spending last season with the Kings.

He averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists and 5.4 rebounds in 64 games for Sacramento before declining his player option and testing the market. There has been at least some recent movement surrounding his name.

Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line reported that the Kings have considered bringing Westbrook back as they search for a veteran guard to help mentor No. 7 overall pick Darius Acuff Jr.

A reunion would make some sense. Westbrook already knows the organization and could provide experience for a young Sacramento roster, though the Kings would presumably want to make sure his role doesn’t interfere with Acuff’s development.

Meanwhile, Hall of Famer Rick Barry recently told Rockets On SI that he believes Westbrook would be a “nice addition” in Houston.

Whether the Rockets actually share that interest is another matter. Their backcourt is already crowded, and they would need to create additional financial and roster flexibility.

For Westbrook, apparently, there’s no sense worrying about any of it.

He wants to keep playing basketball. Now it’s just a matter of finding out where.
