Russell Westbrook remains unsigned. Hall of Famer Rick Barry believes the Rockets should consider changing that.
In an exclusive interview with Eric Jay Santos of Rockets On SI, Barry said Westbrook could provide experience, depth and toughness for a Houston team trying to contend in the Western Conference.
“Even at his age, Westbrook was putting up good numbers the last two seasons, other than his free-throw percentage,” Barry told Santos. “His three-point shooting percentage is nothing to get excited about, but it’s more than acceptable.”
Westbrook averaged 15.2 points, 6.7 assists and 5.4 rebounds in 64 games with the Kings last season. At 37, he is unlikely to command more than a veteran-minimum contract.
Barry, who finished his playing career with the Rockets, believes Westbrook still has something to offer.
“Obviously, someone with his experience and skill level would be a nice addition to the Rockets,” Barry said. “It all comes down to how well the team chemistry works and how committed they are to being a good defensive team.”
The fit isn’t perfect. Houston already has Fred VanVleet, Marcus Smart, Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard in the backcourt. Westbrook’s limited outside shooting could also create spacing issues alongside Thompson and Alperen Sengun.
As Santos noted, the Rockets would need to clear approximately $2.2 million and open a roster spot to sign Westbrook. Moving JD Davison with a second-round pick could potentially accomplish both.
Westbrook would offer insurance if injuries strike again. Houston was without VanVleet, Kevin Durant and Steven Adams during its playoff series against the Lakers.
Barry also praised the former MVP’s approach.
“I always loved the way Westbrook put it all on the line every time he put on his uniform,” he said.
Whether the Rockets share Barry’s interest remains unknown. But if Westbrook is willing to accept a limited role and minimum contract, Barry believes a Houston reunion could work.
