Luka Doncic reacts to Lakers sale: ‘No limit to the potential of this iconic franchise’

Luka Doncic apparently likes what he sees from the Lakers’ latest changing of the guard.

Shortly after news broke Wednesday that Mark Walter had agreed to sell controlling interest in the Lakers to a group led by Josh Kushner and Bob Iger at a record $12.5 billion valuation, Doncic offered his first public reaction.

And yes, championships were mentioned.

“Being a Laker means everything to me, and I’m excited to get back on the court and bring a championship to LA,” Doncic wrote on X. “I’ve gotten used to big changes over these last few years, but I know that no matter what, there is no limit to the potential of this iconic franchise.

“I look forward to meeting Josh and Bob so we can get to work building something special in LA together.”

That’s a pretty strong welcome from the player around whom the entire franchise is now being built.

The Lakers have undergone almost unimaginable change in a short period. Doncic arrived from Dallas in the stunning February 2025 trade, LeBron James departed for Philadelphia this summer, and Los Angeles reshaped the roster around Doncic by adding Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton while re-signing Austin Reaves.

Now the ownership box is changing, too.

Kushner and Iger agreed to purchase the Lakers at a valuation that would represent the largest sale of an American professional sports franchise. The deal still requires approval from the NBA Board of Governors.

Doncic clearly isn’t waiting for that process to play out before making his feelings known.

The Lakers are his team now, and judging by his first message to the incoming owners, Doncic is ready to get to work.
