VJ Edgecombe on role with star-studded Sixers: ‘I just want to win’

VJ Edgecombe knows things are going to be different in Philadelphia next season. He also doesn’t sound particularly worried about it.

The second-year 76ers guard says he’s prepared for whatever role comes his way after the offseason additions of LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.

“I just want to win,” Edgecombe said, via Chris Hine of the Philadelphia Inquirer. “I’m going to still be aggressive, still be myself. If that comes with less shots or more shots, who knows.”

Edgecombe averaged 16.0 points on 13.7 field-goal attempts as a rookie, shooting 35.4 percent from three. With James and Brown now joining Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid, touches obviously could become a little harder to find.

Edgecombe sees another side to that equation.

“It’s fine if they don’t respect me, I’ll just get a bunch of open shots,” he said.

Then there’s the LeBron part. Edgecombe grew up with James as his favorite player and admitted he was starstruck when James first FaceTimed him. Apparently, that still hasn’t entirely worn off.

Their relationship has continued to grow, with Edgecombe regularly asking James questions and trying to absorb whatever he can.

“I’m totally excited,” Edgecombe said. “It’s such a blessing. I’m going into year two, playing alongside my favorite player ever.”

So yes, Edgecombe’s role may change.

But judging by his comments, he seems considerably more interested in what the Sixers might accomplish than how many shots he gets along the way.
