The Cavaliers’ rebounding problems showed up again in their preseason opener, and Zach Weiss of Sports Illustrated believes the solution has to come from the entire roster.
Weiss argued that the Cavs’ size should give them enough to improve on the glass, but only if everyone contributes. I’d say that’s a pretty great idea.
He pointed to Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen as the obvious starting point, while noting that Peyton Watson’s size should help compared to smaller wing options.
In the backcourt, Weiss believes Donovan Mitchell’s athleticism and James Harden’s size should allow both guards to help finish possessions.
The same applies to the second unit, where players such as Mario Hezonja, Craig Porter Jr. and Thomas Bryant can contribute with either size or athleticism.
The larger point from Weiss is that rebounding cannot fall solely on Mobley and Allen.
The Cavs struggled to finish defensive possessions last season, and coach Kenny Atkinson has already acknowledged that rebounding remains a concern.
Anyway, they will get another early test against the Magic, a team with plenty of size of its own.
For Weiss, that makes the next preseason game a useful opportunity to see whether the Cavs can begin correcting one of their more obvious weaknesses before the regular season arrives. Tipoff on Sunday is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Rocket Arena.
