Warriors’ Stephen Curry will play in opener after injury scare

The Warriors will have Stephen Curry for Wednesday’s season opener against the Lakers after an injury scare interrupted his practice Sunday.

Curry completed a full practice Monday, and coach Steve Kerr told reporters he will play in Los Angeles, via Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports Bay Area.

That’s welcome news for a team already preparing to open without Jimmy Butler, Moses Moody and Kristaps Porzingis.

Curry slipped during Sunday’s open-practice scrimmage, fell to the court and slammed the basketball in frustration. He limped off and briefly tried to walk off the injury before heading to the locker room, prompting concern among teammates and fans.

While the injury initially appeared to involve his knee, Kerr clarified afterward that Curry had tweaked his right ankle and said he expected the 38-year-old to be “fine.” A team source also told ESPN’s Anthony Slater the injury was not serious.

Monday’s full practice backed up that encouraging assessment. The Warriors still face a challenging start with Butler recovering from an ACL tear, Moody working back from a ruptured patellar tendon and Porzingis dealing with an illness.

But they can prepare for the Lakers with Curry available to lead the offense.
