Cavs to waive Riley Minix, clearing spot for Norchad Omier

The Cavaliers have made the roster decision needed to bring Norchad Omier aboard.

The Cavs plan to waive two-way forward Riley Minix, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. That would open a spot for Omier, who changed course on a deal with the Timberwolves earlier this week and intends to sign a two-way contract with the Cavs.

Minix had occupied one of the team’s three two-way spots alongside Tristan Enaruna and Ernest Udeh Jr.

He’s coming off a productive G League season, averaging 18.0 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.3 steals. Minix shot 51.9% from the field and 42.8% from 3-point range, per Scotto.

The Cavs are opting for another player with strong G League production, though Omier’s most obvious contribution comes closer to the basket.

The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 18.3 points and 11.4 rebounds across 38 games with the Cleveland Charge and San Diego Clippers last season. He earned G League All-Rookie honors and finished third in Rookie of the Year voting.

Omier also appeared in six NBA games with the Clippers. His previous time with the Charge gives the Cavs some familiarity with what he offers.

With rebounding an ongoing concern, taking another look makes sense. A two-way deal doesn’t guarantee Omier a role in Kenny Atkinson’s rotation, but the Cavs are creating an opportunity for him to earn one.
