Norchad Omier to sign with Cavs after backing out of Timberwolves deal

Norchad Omier was headed to the Timberwolves earlier Tuesday. By Tuesday night, he had changed his mind and was headed back to a familiar organization.

The Cavaliers intend to sign Omier to a two-way contract, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. The 25-year-old forward spent part of last season with the Cleveland Charge before joining the Clippers.

There’s still a roster decision to make. The Cavs have all three two-way spots occupied by Tristan Enaruna, Riley Minix and Ernest Udeh Jr., meaning one will need to be waived to complete the signing.

Omier gives the Cavs another developmental option with a fairly obvious strength. At 6-foot-7, he’s undersized for interior work, but his rebounding production has been hard to miss.

Across 38 G League games with the Charge and San Diego Clippers last season, Omier averaged 18.3 points, 11.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists, shooting 59.2% from the field. He earned All-Rookie honors and finished third in the league’s Rookie of the Year voting.

That doesn’t automatically translate into an NBA rotation spot. But the Cavs already have some familiarity with him, and those numbers offer a reason to take another look.

Omier went undrafted out of Baylor in 2025 and became the first Nicaraguan-born NBA player. He appeared in six games for the Clippers after signing a two-way deal in February.

He later attended training camp with the Wolves, appearing in six preseason games before being waived. He was set to return to the Charge before Tuesday’s developments.

Meanwhile, the Wolves already waived Enrique Freeman to create an opening. They’ll now reassess their options, per Scotto.

For the Cavs, the next step is clearing a spot. Which player they move on from has yet to be reported.
