Cavs’ two-way players could get closer look with injuries mounting

Two-way contracts usually come with a lot of discussion about development. For the Cavaliers, the more immediate question is whether those players can help cover some minutes.

Tristan Enaruna already got that opportunity Wednesday, playing nearly 16 minutes in the loss to the Thunder. With injuries affecting the rotation, others could follow.

The Cavs waived Riley Minix to clear a spot for Norchad Omier, leaving Enaruna, Omier and Ernest Udeh Jr. as their three two-way players, as Zach Weiss of Sports Illustrated outlined.

We covered the Minix decision earlier Thursday. The basketball significance is fairly straightforward. The Cavs are taking another look at a rebounder they know, while keeping two other developmental frontcourt options.

Omier spent part of last season with the Charge before joining the Clippers on a two-way deal. Across 38 G League games with the two organizations, he averaged 18.3 points and 11.4 rebounds.

At 6-foot-7, he’ll have to prove that his work around the basket translates against NBA size. But rebounding is an area where the Cavs could use some help, and his production gives them a reason to see what he can offer.

Enaruna has already received a small opportunity with the NBA club. Udeh, an undrafted center, is still looking for his debut and figures to benefit from regular work with the Charge.

None of this guarantees a rotation spot. It does give Kenny Atkinson additional players to consider while Jarrett Allen, Peyton Watson and Tyrese Proctor are questionable for Friday’s game against the Sixers and Jaylon Tyson remains out.

The Cavs need their regulars healthy. Until then, a few developmental minutes could become meaningful ones.
