During the offseason, Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman snuck in and landed Donovan Mitchell from the Jazz in a move that stunned the NBA.
Could Altman make another move to help the rising Cavs take another step?
Well, maybe. As one opposing GM told Hoops Wire, Altman is “fearless” when it comes to trying to improve the roster.
It’s something Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix addressed as well.
“Cleveland is loaded, but J.B. Bickerstaff could probably find a use for a versatile wing like Jae Crowder or Dorian Finney-Smith,” Mannix wrote. “The Cavs still have a few assets to deal and an aggressive, Koby Altman–led front office that might be willing to use them.”
Now that 74 players became trade-eligible on Dec. 15 (full post), trade season is officially underway. The deadline will again come in early February. Between now and then, Altman will undoubtedly do his due diligence and work the phones.
Crowder certainly is the type of player that would be on Altman’s radar — given that the Suns veteran is very available and the Cavs have yet to solve their small forward spot.
Hoops Wire is hearing Pistons guard/forward Alec Burks and Magic shooting guard Terrence Ross could be among those drawing interest from the Cavs as well. Granted, those are hardly splashy names, but they are veterans who could prove to be a fit.
Trade candidates on the Cavs are likely to be Cedi Osman, Isaac Okoro, Robin Lopez and Raul Neto, and potentially even Caris LeVert and Kevin Love.
While the sense is the Cavs are hardly feeling desperate to make a deal, we’ve all seen Altman in action. After all, this is the same man who worked out a Kyrie Irving trade during his first month or so on the job back in 2018.
Altman is also the same man who landed Mitchell this past summer. So if there is a way to try to potentially improve the Cavs, you can be sure Altman will not hesitate to make a move. He sure hasn’t hesitated yet.
