Pistons Signing GM Troy Weaver to Contract Extension, Agreed on Months Ago

The Pistons are signing general manager Troy Weaver to a contract extension, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

The deal was actually agreed on months ago, added Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports, and it is likely to become official soon. No word on why it is just now being finalized, but all that matters to Weaver and the Pistons is that it soon will be a done deal.

Weaver reportedly signed a four-year deal upon being named Pistons GM in 2020, coming over from the Thunder. Terms of the extension have not been reported.

As Charania noted, Weaver has been behind some of the Pistons’ more notable moves in recent seasons, drafting guard Cade Cunningham with the No. 1 overall pick in 2021, then acquiring guard/forward Bojan Bogdanovic in a trade with the Jazz this past offseason.

He has also made some questionable deals, however, including trading center Christian Wood to the Rockets for forward Trevor Ariza and center Isaiah Stewart, in a deal that also involved picks.

But overall, Weaver has done what could be a better-than-solid job in aiming to rebuild the Pistons into the power they once were. 

His last move came back on Oct. 14, when the Pistons signed center/forward Devontae Cacok — who was waived on the same day.
