The Celtics have removed the interim tag from Joe Mazzulla‘s title and officially promoted him to head coach.
Mazzulla, 34, becomes the youngest head coach in the league and has led the Celtics (42-17) to the best record in the Eastern Conference at the All-Star break. He replaced Ime Udoka, suspended before the season.
“As he has shown, Joe is a very talented coach and leader,” said president of basketball operations Brad Stevens. “He has a unique ability to galvanize a room around a mission. We are thankful for the work he has done to help get us to this point, and excited that he has agreed to lead us into the future.”
Mazzulla has been an assistant with the Celtics since 2019. Before that, he was the head coach at Division II Fairmont (W.Va.) State. He spent the 2016-17 season as an assistant with Celtics’ G League affiliate in Maine.
