If the Clippers again fail to put together a serious playoff run or turn out to be serious contenders, you can bet there will be changes.
Maybe a Kawhi Leonard trade. Maybe Paul George. And maybe moving on from Russell Westbrook in their elusive search for a true point guard and third star.
Or how about coach Tyronn Lue? He’s respected by players and peers, but if the Clippers continue to just sort of spin their wheels … well, you never know what changes could take place next.
This is something Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports discussed on the Ball Don’t Lie Podcast, via HoopsHype.
“The Clippers are a team that is at least one that looks like it has a question mark of who will be comprising this, you know, a chance to compete for a title,” Fischer said. “If that is still the goal, which it seems like will be moving forward next season, whether that’s in the front office … Ty Lue, as respected head coach as they come, but there has been chatter, let’s say about potentially him, in theory, removing himself from the situation at a certain point in time.
“So there’s a lot I think, at stake on the other side of LA where the Lakers get all the attention and (LeBron James‘) quest for a fifth ring is always soaking up the headlines, the Clippers could end up becoming a super buzzy team in the postseason and but again, that could be a situation for a lot of organizations.”
Fischer was for the most part speculating here, and that makes sense. Nothing will be determined with teams such as the Clippers until their playoff runs have ended.
But sources have told Hoops Wire it is indeed highly unlikely that the Clippers will stand pat if their season ends in the first or second round. Right now, especially with Paul George injured, that seems to be where LA is headed.
In that instance, not only could roster changes and coaching changes take place, but they would be understandable.
