Rockets Expected to Part Ways With Coach Stephen Silas

The Rockets are in a rebuilding situation and are expected to make a coaching change to get them to another level.Stephen Silas

Per Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, multiple league executives expect Houston to move on from coach Stephen Silas after the season.

Silas was hired in 2020 to coach a very different team, Fischer noted. Back then, all candidates had to meet with former star guards James Harden and Russell Westbrook. Both of those players have moved on, with each having played for two other teams since then.

There have been rumors that Harden could return as a free agent this summer, but that seems more like a ploy floated by his agent to get more money from the 76ers, Harden’s current team.

Either way, the Rockets would like to make a run at the playoffs next season, Fischer reported. And if not the playoffs, at least the play-in tournament. In other words, they aim to improve significantly after a run in the NBA Draft Lottery.

Silas, 49, has compiled a 57-177 record in his three seasons with the Rockets (entering Friday). Before coming to Houston, he spent 17 years overall as an assistant with the Mavericks, Hornets, Cavaliers and Warriors.

He is the son of the late legendary big man and former coach Paul Silas.
