JJ Redick Frontrunner to Replace Jeff Van Gundy as ESPN In-Game Analyst

Former NBA shooting guard J.J. Redick has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Jeff Van Gundy and join Mark Jackson as a lead in-game analyst for NBA broadcasts on ESPN and ABC, per Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports.

Redick, 39, spent this past year as an analyst on ESPN/ABC studio shows and served as an in-game analyst during broadcasts of NBA Summer League games.

Along with Redick, former NBA forward Richard Jefferson, ex-NBA coach Doc Rivers and analyst Doris Burke are also “in play” to join Jackson and play-by-play man Tim Breen on the ESPN/ABC top NBA broadcast team, McCarthy reported.

As a player, Redick spent 15 years in the NBA as one of its top 3-point marksmen. He retired at the end of the 2020-21 season with the Mavericks, joining ESPN in his current analyst role shortly thereafter.

The No. 11 overall pick by the Magic in 2006, Redick spent his first seven seasons with Orlando. He also spent time with the Clippers, 76ers, and Bucks, as well as the Pelicans and Mavs in his final season.

He retired with career averages of 12.8 points and 42 percent shooting on threes.

Van Gundy, 61, is a former head coach of the Rockets and Knicks, and had been with ESPN for 16 years. He was among the network’s latest round of layoffs, announced at the start of the month.
