One anonymous NBA scout doesn’t appear to be a believer in the perceived upside of Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton.
“I think Collin Sexton is a backup and an a–hole. None of his teammates like him,” the scout told Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated.
Sexton is entering his fourth season and is the Cavs’ returning leading scorer. Mannix was among the first to report this past offseason that the Cavs were exploring the possibility of trading Sexton, as he is due for a contract extension.
On the record, Sexton’s teammates have actually indicated they enjoy playing with him. Most have previously indicated to Hoops Wire that they do, in fact, like him.
Still, questions remain about whether he is a fit next to Darius Garland in the Cavs backcourt.
“I actually like Garland. I think he plays hard,” the scout told Mannix. “He puts pressure on you because he can shoot, he can pass, and he’s a much more willing passer. He’s not out there trying to f—–g get his stats and go home in the same way that Sexton is.
“I don’t think they can play those two small guards together and get a ton out of them.”
One prominent agent shared similar beliefs with the Sexton-Garland combo with Hoops Wire, indicating he has his doubts that they are a long-term match as starters.
Along with that, opposing players have heaped praise on Garland, a member of the Team USA Select Team this past summer. Meanwhile, opponents have reportedly poked fun at members of the Cavs for having to play with Sexton, per a report from The Athletic near the end of last season.
No matter how you spin it, the Cavs have won just 19, 19 and 22 games in the three years since LeBron James left for the Lakers — and the scout doesn’t seem to think there will be much improvement this season.
“I thought they were on the right track last year until they traded for Jarrett Allen and basically told Andre Drummond we’re not bringing you back, because defensively they were hanging around that top 10 area,” the scout told Mannix. “Evan Mobley to me seems like he’s the real deal in terms of his talent, his skillset. Again, he’s a rookie who floated some in college so we’ll see how that goes.
“Not a big Jarrett Allen guy. He’s fine but nothing crazy. Isaac Okoro seems like he’s got the potential to be a pretty damn good defender but I don’t know how much more than that.”

Seems quite a bit more like a scout with an agenda than a reporter anything real to report.
I hope it was a good payoff for Mannix, selling such trash.
