Legendary big man and former Washington general manager Bob Ferry has passed away, Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. told reporters Wednesday. Ferry was 84.
Ferry was the general manager of the then-Washington Bullets won they won the NBA championship in 1978. They returned the next season, but lost in a rematch with the Seattle SuperSonics.
The franchise has not returned to the Finals since.
The father of former NBA player and GM Danny Ferry, Bob Ferry played in the NBA from 1959-68 with the St. Louis Hawks, Detroit Pistons ad Baltimore Bullets. His No. 43 has been retired by St. Louis University.
A 6-foot-8 forward, Ferry compiled career averages of 9.3 points and 5.1 rebounds.
“He was a two-time Executive of Year, made playoffs 13 of 17 seasons, reached three Finals and won 1978 NBA title with Washington,” wrote Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. “He was also the second GM to hire two different African-American head coaches.”
Ferry hired K.C. Jones, followed by Wes Unseld Sr. Both preceded Ferry in death.
