You have to wonder if Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wishes LeBron James would just retire already.
Probably not, but after breaking Abdul-Jabbar’s all-time scoring record last season, James just passed him in another category that speaks to both players’ longevity — and that would be the most minutes in NBA history when combining the regular season and playoffs.
James, 38, set the record in the Los Angeles Lakers’ road game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday, passing Abdul-Jabbar with 54,645 regular season minutes. When you include the playoffs, James passed Kareem at 11,654 minutes.
Interestingly, James is still outstanding at this age and Abdul-Jabbar was at 38, too.
Of course, the Lakers could probably use more minutes from LeBron, as they are a different — and less impactful — team without him on the court. So as long as the LA keeps really, really needing him, he is probably going to set more records. Now, he holds two of the absolute most telling.
