Kemba Walker Feeling Good As Knicks Race Out Of Gate

He’s not the Kemba Walker of old, but he’s not an old Walker, either.Kemba Walker

Instead, the veteran point guard has played a large role in his first season with the Knicks, helping lead them to four wins in their first five games.

“This is the best I’ve felt in a very long time,’’ Walker said, via Marc Berman of the New York Post. “My days consist of me taking care of myself. I don’t mean that when I’m in the facility with the trainers. I mean that when I’m home. When I’m in my room, I’m taking care of my knee.

“That’s like my whole day. There’s a lot of preparation leading up to these games for me.’’

The Knicks edged the Bulls by a 104-103 count in Chicago on Thursday. Walker finished with 21 points on an efficient 7-of-12 shooting.

He has fit in well under coach Tom Thibodeau and alongside the likes of Julius Randle, RJ Barrett and fellow newcomer Evan Fournier.

Walker, 31, is also one half of New York’s experienced and effective point guard tandem next to Derrick Rose.

“It’s just the opportunities,’’ Walker said. “The guys we have on our team, we have a lot of space. Julius is drawing a lot of attention, he’s finding me. That’s due to our offense, guys are cutting, drawing defenders and the ball is just swinging around to me. I’m getting some great looks. My teammates are setting great screens.’’

Walker arrived after the Celtics traded him to the Thunder, then had his contract bought out by OKC. As Berman noted, there were plenty of doubts after Walker was limited to just 432 games last season in Boston.

But it’s been a case of so far, so good with the Knicks.

“I guess I wasn’t considered a big move, which is fine,’’ Walker said. “The outside noise doesn’t really matter. It all comes down to how you work and the people you’re around every single day.

“We’ve been together for so long now, we’re just jelling together so well. It really doesn’t matter what any reporter or media says about a team.”

The Knicks visit the Pelicans on Saturday.

  1. This is how I wish sports were covered. No hate or ill will toward thise who play the game. An inside look into whats going on with players and what goes into their efforts to perform at a high level. The sacrifices they make in some cases. And a minimum baseline of respect for them as human beings first.

    Thank you Sam Amico!
