Hawks guard Lou Williams may be playing his final season, he told Taylor Rooks of Bleacher Report in a sitdown interview.
“Probably my last season,” Williams told Rooks, adding however, that he thought the same thing last year.
“I have the clarity, I’m OK with that,” he said. “But I’m also OK with continuing to play if that’s where it takes me. I’m prepared for the worst.”
Williams, 35, is 6-foot-1 and plays both guard spots off the bench, averaging 10.0 points and 3.4 assists in 24 appearances with the Hawks after a late-season trade with the Clippers. He averaged a total of 11.3 points in 66 games overall.
But Williams played a smaller role in the Hawks’ run to the Eastern Conference finals, and is scoring 6.3 points through six games this year. He will be a free agent at the end of the season.
A three-time Sixth Man of the Year award winner, Williams has also spent time with the Rockets, Lakers, Raptors and 76ers. This is actually his second stint with the Hawks.
He said that he had actually contemplated retirement right after last season’s trade that sent him from LA to Atlanta for Rajon Rondo.
“It took me a few days to get here because once I arrived, I wanted my energy to be positive,” Williams said after the trade, via Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I wanted my experience to be positive. I didn’t want the guys to look at it like I didn’t want to be here. It wasn’t personal against the Hawks. I just needed time to figure out what was best for myself at this stage of my career, but now I’m here and I’ve been embraced. Seems as though guys want me here, so I’m ready to get back to work and make this push.”
