The Cavaliers haven’t seen a rookie quite like forward Evan Mobley in some time, and on Thursday, the league showed it too has taken notice.
Mobley very well may be the best rookie in the NBA, and was the recipient of the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month award for October and November, the first of the season.
Thunder guard Josh Giddy, also off to a strong start, received the same award in the West.
Mobley is 7-foot-0 and has helped changed the Cavs’ fortunes, already resembling the type of versatile, yet selfless, big man who will help change the direction of the franchise. The Cavs (12-10) haven’t been above .500 this far into a season without LeBron James in 21 years.
Mobley has been a big reason for that, as the Cavs are 11-6 when he’s on the court, in spite of a tough and road-heavy schedule.
Entering Friday’s road game vs. the Wizards, he is carrying averages of 14.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists, teaming with Jarrett Allen in the frontcourt to make it near impossible for opponents to score in the paint.

Meanwhile, Giddy is 6-8 and is averaging 10.4 points, 7.2 rebounds and leads all rookies in assists at 5.8 per game.
Per the NBA release, “He has scored double-figures in six of his last seven games and tallied seven-plus assists nine times so far this season.”
Giddy was selected with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
Other nominees in each conference …
East: Scottie Barnes (Raptors), Cade Cunningham (Pistons), Chris Duarte (Pacers) and Franz Wagner (Magic).
West: Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun (Rockets), Davion Mitchell (Sacramento Kings) and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl (Thunder).
