New details emerge in JR Smith family assault case

New details have emerged regarding the family violence assault charge against former Cavaliers guard J.R. Smith.

Smith allegedly caused bodily injury to a woman on Sept. 18 by “hitting, grabbing or pushing” her with his hand, according to a criminal complaint obtained by the New York Post.

The complaint alleges Smith “intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly” caused the injury. The woman was described in the filing as a member of Smith’s family or household or someone with whom he had a dating relationship.

As we reported earlier at Hoops Wire, Smith was arrested Monday during a traffic stop in Royse City, Texas. Police said an automatic license plate reader alerted an officer to an active warrant issued by the Southlake Police Department.

Smith was booked on one misdemeanor count of assault causing bodily injury family violence and released Tuesday on $5,000 bond, according to jail records cited by the New York Post. His attorney, Justin A. Moore, issued a statement Friday.

“Mr. Smith is eager to see this matter resolved and has full confidence in the legal process,” Moore said. “He is presumed innocent, and we will address this matter in Court. We ask that everyone respect the privacy of all involved throughout the process.”

Smith is reportedly due in court for a hearing later this month. The 41-year-old played 16 NBA seasons from 2004-20 and spent parts of six seasons with the Cavs, helping Cleveland win the 2016 NBA championship. He later won another title with the Lakers in 2020.
