It’s safe to say Miles McBride played a pivotal role in the New York Knicks’ Game 1 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the NBA playoffs — even drawing chants from the crowd at Madison Square Garden.
Final score: Knicks 111, visiting 76ers 1-04 on Saturday.
While Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart led the way with 22 points each, McBride’s performance was particularly noteworthy, scoring 21 points and just generally making a big impact off the bench.
McBride’s strong second quarter, during which he outscored the 76ers by himself, helped the Knicks build momentum. Despite Joel Embiid‘s efforts to rally the Sixers, including a strong second half, timely plays from Hart and others secured the win for New York.
Mitchell Robinson, who has transitioned to a reserve role since returning from injury, played a crucial part in defending Embiid and contributing eight points and 12 rebounds.
The Knicks demonstrated better balance across their roster compared to the 76ers, with McBride stepping up when Brunson had an off shooting night. Despite Embiid’s return from injury and strong performance, the Knicks’ depth and resilience ultimately proved too much.
Embiid finished with 29 points and eight rebounds, while guard Tyrese Maxey led the way with a game-high 33 points.
“They protected home court,” 76ers guard Kyle Lowry said. “We have to go, watch the film, understand what we need to do, what we need to get better at and go from there.”
Looking ahead, the 76ers will need to regroup and analyze their performance to bounce back in Game 2, especially considering Embiid’s health and limitations.
Embiid underwent meniscus surgery in February and was listed as questionable on Saturday.
“I think he is really a warrior and he’s battling,” coach Nick Nurse said. “I think he absolutely wants to play.”
Meanwhile, the Knicks will aim to maintain their momentum and secure another win on their home court.
