The Detroit Pistons are acquiring shooting guard Wendell Moore Jr. and the No. 37 overall pick from the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for the No. 53 pick, per Shams Charania and Jon Kryczynski of The Athletic.
Moore, 22, is 6-foot-5 and appeared in 25 games with Minnesota last season, spending much of his time in the G League. He appeared in 29 games as a rookie before that.
The Pistons selected wing Ron Holland of the G League Ignite with the No. 5 overall pick in the first round of the NBA Draft on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Minnesota nabbed guard Rob Dillingham (Kentucky), drafted No. 8, in a trade with the Spurs — as well as forward Terrence Shannon Jr. (Illinois) with their own pick at No. 27.
For the Pistons, this marks the first draft under new head of basketball operations Trajan Langdon, who came over from the New Orleans Pelicans. Along with the draft, the Pistons still need to hire a coach. Former Cleveland Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff and current Pelicans assistant James Borrego are among those believed to be in the running.
They fired coach Monty Williams after just one season, a few weeks after Langdon took the job. Detroit still owes Williams $65 million.
No matter, the Pistons could use help — and lots of it — in all areas after setting the NBA record with 28 straight losses. They finished a league-worst 14-68.
“The Pistons are 94-290 (.245) over the past five seasons, easily the worst in the league,” wrote Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. “Detroit was the third-youngest team in the league.”
