The Lakers have officially signed point guard Darren Collison and forward Stanley Johnson on a pair of 10-day contracts, the team announced in a press release.
Collison, 34, has been retired and linked to the Lakers for some time. He worked out with the Warriors in September, but never landed a deal.
He is best known for his time with the Pacers, but retired at the end of the 2018-19 season. He has been considering a return to the NBA over the past year.
Collison has also spent time with the Kings, Clippers, Mavericks and Hornets. He averaged 11.2 points and 6.0 assists in 76 games in his last NBA season with the Pacers.
Johnson, 25, signed a 10-day hardship contract with the Bulls on Dec. 8, but entered COVID protocols before appearing in a game. Given that he was just signed, the presumption is he’s entirely healthy.
He appeared in 61 games with the Raptors last season, averaging 4.4 points and 2.5 rebounds. He had been playing in the G League with the South Bay Lakers earlier this year after signing with the club Nov. 15.
He was originally drafted by the Pistons with the No. 8 overall pick in 2015 and has made a name for himself with strong perimeter defense. He has also played for the Pelicans.
With Collison and Johnson, the Lakers have made four hardship signings. (Isaiah Thomas and Jemerrio Jones are the others.) LA has give players in the protocols at the moment.
The Lakers, of course, are also missing Anthony Davis, out with a sprained MCL. They have dropped four straight entering their Christmas Day matchup vs. the Nets, falling below .500 at 16-17.
