Cavs May Again Look To Ty Jerome For Backcourt Assistance

Cavaliers guard Ty Jerome missed all but a game and a half with a mysterious ankle injury last season, but he could become the veteran backup the team is missing under new coach Kenny Atkinson.Ty Jerome, Cavaliers, NBA

At least, that seemed to be the take from Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.

“If the Cavs are going to be committed to trying to diversify their offense and try and not put as much pressure or playmaking responsibility on Darius Garland and Donovan Mitchell, Ty Jerome is somebody who can take some of those responsibilities,” Fedor said on the Wine & Gold Talk Podcast.

“I think there are a lot of signs that if Ty Jerome is on this team, he remains on this team through the trade deadline, I think he’s going to get an opportunity to be the backup point guard coming out of training camp.”

The Cavs do realize they need to sign some veteran free agents to back up both the guard and frontcourt spots. Rookie Jaylon Tyson could receive minutes, too.

Along with Jerome and Tyson, the Cavaliers will again have the likes of sharpshooter Sam Merrill and second-year point guard Craig Porter Jr. coming off the bench. Caris LeVert and Isaac Okoro (still an unrestricted free agent) both can play in the backcourt, as can starting small forward Max Strus.

No matter, there’s a chance Cleveland could look in another direction and perhaps bring in still another veteran backcourt player. I discussed all that and a whole lot more on the latest Hoops Wire, which you can view directly below.
