Rumors of Lakers coach Frank Vogel being on the hot seat have picked up steam recently, with the latest report coming from Sam Amick and Bill Oram of The Athletic.
Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka has assembled an older and fairly clunky roster around 37-year old star LeBron James, but it appears Vogel would be the man taking the fall for the team’s uneven season.
“Vogel was nearly fired after the Lakers were blown out by the Denver Nuggets on Saturday,” RealGM relayed. “Had a similar result happened on Monday against Utah, Vogel likely would have been dismissed.”
Or as Amick and Oram reported, “Vogel is being evaluated on a game-to-game basis.”
Vogel and the Lakers won the NBA title in the Orlando bubble just two years ago. But the Lakers were bounced by the eventual Western Conference champion Suns in the first round last season. They then revamped the entire roster, adding Russell Westbrook in a trade, and it’s only been more of the same.
With these Lakers, you never know what you’re going to get from one night to the next, even when Anthony Davis is healthy. For that, fair or not, the coach usually takes the blame.
Vogel, 48, is 187-116 during his time in LA. He has also coached the Pacers and Magic, and is 420-362 in 11 seasons overall.
