The Nuggets are hiring Mike Singer, formerly a beat reporter covering the team, to the front office, per Bennett Durando of the Denver Post.
Durando should know, as Singer is the writer that Durando replaced on the Nuggets beat at the outlet. Singer covered the Nuggets for the Denver Post from 2018 to 2023. His role in the team’s front office comes with the official title of “director of intelligence and strategy.”
His hiring isn’t the only shuffling going on in the Nuggets’ front office, headed by general manager Calvin Booth.
“In addition to Singer’s hire, Todd Checovich is being promoted as the organization’s scouting director after Drew Nicholas, who held the position for two years, accepted a new job with the Brooklyn Nets this summer, according to a source,” Durando reported.
Singer is the former NBA editor at USA Today. His book, “Why So Serious? The Untold Story of NBA Champion Nikola Jokic,” is due out this season. (Link to purchase.)
Denver won the NBA title in 2023 but lost to Minnesota in the Western Conference semifinals last season. That said, the Nuggets are again expected to be at or near the top of the Western Conference, thanks largely to Jokic, Jamal Murray and former champions such as Michael Porter Jr., Aaron Gordon and Christian Braun, expected to replace the departed Kentavious Caldwell-Pope as a starter.
While Singer is widely respected in his own right, his decision to join the Nuggets is only the second-biggest NBA media news of the day. The first, of course, is ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski announcing his retirement to become GM of the St. Bonaventure men’s basketball program.
