NBA Preview Magazine Makes Comeback Nearly 15 Years After Shutting Down

For those of you who missed Athlon Sports’ NBA season preview magazine, fear not. It’s back — and some will tell you it’s better than ever.Victor Wembanyama, Spurs, NBA

OK, full disclosure time. Yours Truly wrote for the mag, officially called the Athlon Sports 2024-25 Season Preview. For the record, I previewed the Cavaliers, Nuggets and Pistons, as well as wrote an introductory piece, “15 Key Storylines” to watch during the looming NBA season.

In the event that alone doesn’t excite you (nor should it), just know that no less than Basketball Hall of Famer Marc Stein of The Stein Line also contributed. Stein even wrote about the excitement of preview mag season in his Substack newsletter.

Interestingly, I last wrote for the magazine 20 years ago, at one point writing up to nine team previews. Athlon Sports last published an NBA preview in 2010.

You can check out all five regional covers and order the magazine by mail right here.

“The Lakers’ LeBron James is featured on the cover of the magazine’s national edition and there are regional covers that spotlight Boston’s Jayson Tatum, New York’s Jalen Brunson, Golden State’s Stephen Curry and San Antonio’s Victor Wembanyama,” Stein wrote.

“The magazine contains exactly what you would expect: A handful of features like my piece and dedicated previews on all 30 teams, no shortage of predictions and forecasts and a section devoted to fantasy basketball.”

So, yeah. Older guys such as myself — who remember NBA preview magazines in the days before the Internet — are excited. If you check out Athlon Sports’ preview, you might get a hint as to why.
