Legendary Hubie Brown, 91, To Call Final Game For ESPN This Season

Hubie Brown is stepping away from the microphone, but not without one last moment in the spotlight. The 91-year-old NBA broadcasting icon will call one final game this season for ESPN, marking the end of an unparalleled career in basketball.Hubie Brown, NBA

ESPN President Burke Magnus confirmed the news during a Sports Illustrated podcast appearance, emphasizing the network’s admiration for Brown and their plans to honor him with a proper send-off.

“He deserves that,” Magnus said, via Richard Deitsch of The Athletic. “It is absolutely remarkable the level in which he still calls games at age 90-plus.”

Though the date hasn’t been set, Brown is expected to team up with Mike Breen for his swan song.

Brown’s legacy is as unique as it is enduring. He’s seen basketball evolve from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s skyhook to Victor Wembanyama’s breathtaking versatility, and he’s brought it all to life for fans for over 50 years. What’s remarkable is how sharp and passionate he remains. Brown doesn’t just show up for games; he studies, analyzes, and dissects them like a coach prepping for the NBA Finals. That relentless love of the game has defined him.

Last year, Brown told The Athletic he doesn’t wake up feeling 90. Instead, he starts each day with a plan — his signature manila pad filled with tasks and notes. His curiosity and enthusiasm are as strong now as when he started calling games in 1981.

Dave Pasch, one of Brown’s longtime broadcast partners, captured the essence of Brownbest. “

“He’s an incredible teammate,” Pasch said, describing how Brown’s preparation and generosity make those around him better. “He treats me like I’m part of his family.”

From his time coaching to his decades in the booth, Brown has been more than a basketball analyst — he’s been a teacher and ambassador. One last game won’t define him, but it’s fitting that it will celebrate a career dedicated to the love of the sport.

  1. Really thankful to have watched a lot of games he has called.

Like you said Sam, “the love of the sport”. He doesn’t sit there to idolize and promote people. He promotes the game itself. And shows respect to the people involved. Love that guy.
