Anthony Davis, Wizards likely to wait on extension talks

Anthony Davis is now eligible to sign a contract extension with the Wizards. That doesn’t mean one is coming anytime soon.

According to Josh Robbins of The Athletic, Washington and Davis are expected to wait until the regular season is underway before discussing a new deal.

The approach makes sense for both sides.

Davis was acquired from the Mavericks ahead of last season’s trade deadline but never appeared in a game for the Wizards after being shut down with injuries. Assuming he’s healthy, his Washington debut is expected to come on Opening Night.

The veteran big man has two potential extension paths.

If Davis declines his player option for the 2027-28 season, he could become eligible for a four-year extension worth nearly $275 million. If he exercises that option, the extension would be limited to three years and would need to be completed before the regular season begins.

The four-year route appears to be the more likely scenario.

As an aside, there doesn’t seem to be any concern about the relationship between Davis and the organization. Robbins reported that both sides are simply willing to let things play out on the court before revisiting contract talks.

Davis has already begun integrating himself into the franchise, participating in the Wizards’ minicamp during Summer League in Las Vegas and attending games alongside several of his new teammates.

The focus, instead, appears to be on finally getting Davis onto the floor in a Wizards uniform.
