The Chicago Bulls are signing shooting guard DJ Steward to a two-way contract, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Steward, 22, is 6-foot-2 and went undrafted out of Duke in 2021. He has spent the majority of his career with the Stockton Kings of the G League, along with a stint with the Vancouver Bandits of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.
This summer, he’s been with the Bulls in the Las Vegas Summer League, averaging 19.3 points. As Wojnarowski noted, that included a 37-point outburst on Friday.
Chicago now has three two-way players, reaching the NBA limit. Along with Steward, the other two are shooting guard Andrew Funk and power forward Adama Sanogo.
Steward signed with the Boston Celtics last October but was waived before the season. Eight days later, he signed with the Maine Celtics.
As for the Bulls, it has been an offseason of change, with perhaps more on the way. They started by trading guard Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder for guard Josh Giddey. Later, they sent standout wing DeMar DeRozan to the Sacramento Kings in a three-way deal involving the San Antonio Spurs.
Per reports, they are again said to be attempting to trade guard Zach LaVine, though his large contract is viewed as a major hindrance on that front. Trades centered on center Nikola Vucevic may also be a possibility, per reports. So in Chicago, an even bigger shakeup very well could — and probably should — be looming.
