Ben Simmons to the Cavaliers?

Nobody is reporting that. Let’s make that clear right away. But Cavs fans apparently wouldn’t mind seeing the team at least kick the tires.

RealCavsFans.com asked its followers whether they would take Simmons on a training camp invite with an opportunity to make the roster. With 757 votes cast and the poll still open (as of late Monday), 54.2 percent voted yes.

The other 45.8 percent presumably remembered the shooting. But for what it’s worth, this voter went with yes.

Simmons, 30, didn’t play in the NBA last season, but has continued to hint that he’d like another opportunity. He wrote on Instagram earlier this month that he’s “ready for wherever this goes” after spending much of the past year trying to get his body healthy following recurring back problems.

At his best, Simmons was a three-time All-Star, an All-NBA selection and twice a first-team All-Defensive player. Nobody should expect that version anymore.

Still, a camp invite wouldn’t require the Cavs to expect much of anything. Simmons remains a gifted passer, defender and rebounder at 6-foot-10.

Put him around shooters, let him defend multiple positions and distribute the ball, and there are worse experiments for the end of a roster. Just maybe don’t ask him to shoot.

Simmons has mentioned Philadelphia and Miami as possible destinations, although there doesn’t appear to be much momentum behind a 76ers reunion.

As for Cleveland, there has been no reported connection. Cavs fans nevertheless seem willing to entertain one. Barely.
