In this episode, I offer high praise to not just coach Kenny Atkinson and players such as Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, Jarrett Allen and (yes, very much yes) Darius Garland — but also the man who put together the roster.
That would be none other than president of basketball operations Koby Altman (with a shoutout to GM Mike Gansey, Altman’s right-hand man).
Remember this past offseason, when the Cavs did … well, nothing? I can’t tell you how many emails, Facebook comments, and X responses from followers blasting the Cavaliers for failing to make a move.
“Just hiring a coach isn’t enough,” was the general theme of those thoughts. Well, guess what? Through the first 17 games, it was more than enough. So kudos to Altman for keeping it together and making all the right roster moves — simply by not really making any.
As I said on the show, it’s not just the roster and coaches who fit, but it’s the positive culture inside the locker room that works. Part of that is Altman finding the right personalities. Part of it is your star players setting a positive tone. And yes, part of it is dumb luck.
