The Cavaliers have signed undrafted rookie guard Darius Brown II to an Exhibit 10 contract for training camp, according to the RealGM transactions wire.
Brown is 6-foot-2 and averaged 12.3 points, 6.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds last season with Utah State, appearing in 35 games and shooting nearly 40 percent on 3-pointers. So at the college level, he could distribute and really shoot. He played at the same school as Cavs guard Sam Merrill.
This move comes a day after it was revealed the team released veteran guard Jacob Gilyard. Basically, Cleveland has been building up its G League roster with the Charge. They start training camp next month.
The Cavs return to preseason action on Wednesday with a road game against former coach J.B. Bickerstaff and the Pistons. Cleveland (0-2) has suffered two home losses in the preseason, first to the Bulls and then the Pacers. They wrap up the preseason this weekend with a visit to Chicago, then begin the real thing on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at Toronto.
Along with Brown, the Cavs will have some decisions to make on others near the end of the roster, including Pete Nance, former lottery pick Zhaire Smith and Jules Bernard.
An Exhibit 10 contract is a non-guaranteed minimum-salary deal. It doesn’t count toward a team’s cap unless the player makes the final roster. It also can be converted to a two-way deal before the season begins or mean guaranteed money if a player is waived and then stays on the G League club for at least 60 days.
