CLEVELAND — When you’ve won 14 in a row for the second time in the season, you’d think you might bring it up. Well, not these Cavaliers.
It’s true that the Cavs are going for their 15th straight win on Tuesday, with the Brooklyn Nets in town. Cleveland already won 15 straight to start the season, as you know.
But all that is just for fans, and media, and maybe even the league office. Right? Right, suggested Cavs coach Kenny Atkinson.
“We don’t talk about the streak,” Atkinson said just before tipoff Tuesday. “That’s not our (priority). We just keep hammering the principles that will lead to our success. So, that’s where we are.”
Where the Cavs also are today is first in the Eastern Conference at 54-10. That is also the best record in the entire NBA. Nevertheless, they aren’t getting too full of themselves. That’s something they’ve insisted to a man.
They are, however, keeping their eye on the big prize at the end.
“This team’s not letting up,” Atkinson said. “They continue to push it.”
Not always easy when you cruised through February and are playing out the string in March. At least, that’s the way some NBA teams can view it. Again, not these Cavaliers.
“This is a little bit of grind time,” Atkinson said. “There’s fatigue and all that. The grind, the boredom of the season. It can wear on you, but our guys haven’t been impacted by that.”
That much is obvious. The result has been a historic season. Just don’t talk about it.
