Yes, it’s indeed that time again. Not time for the Cavaliers to play an actual game, mind you. Not even time (yet) to practice. But they are set to at least talk about the season.
That much was evident in the press conference that featured president of basketball operations Koby Altman and new coach Kenny Atkinson on Friday. I was there and discussed it all on the latest Hoops Wire Live from 330 to Go. Watch it all directly below.
As I explain in the video, and as Altman explained, the Cavs made almost no notable changes — beyond hiring Atkinson — and that was by design. The word “continuity” was used frequently at the press conference.
“Continuity is a coach’s dream,” Atkinson said. “Continuity and youth.”
Well, if nothing else, the Cavaliers have those things. Atkinson and Altman were also big on the idea that Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland can not only work but flourish together in the backcourt. The same goes for Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen in the frontcourt. Making all that happen is pretty much why Atkinson beat out other candidates and got the job.
Another interesting thought delivered by both the president of basketball operations and the coach was that the Cavs need to be at their best when it means the most — in the playoffs. Altman admitted that hasn’t been the case over the past three seasons. The entire goal is to play the long game and make that happen this season.
For everything else, check out the video. Media Day is Monday in Cleveland, followed by training camp, which tips off Tuesday in Florida. (Yes, the Cavs still plan to go.) Talk to you next time.
