Sean McNeil’s stay on the Cavaliers’ roster lasted just one day. That was apparently the plan all along.
Cleveland waived McNeil after signing the guard to an Exhibit 10 contract. The move clears a roster spot while putting McNeil in position to receive an Exhibit 10 bonus if he spends at least 60 days with the Cleveland Charge.
McNeil already knows the surroundings. The 28-year-old has played for the Cavs’ G League affiliate during each of the past two seasons and is expected to return to the Charge this fall.
The former West Virginia and Ohio State guard averaged 9.5 points in 44 G League appearances last season, shooting 46.0 percent from the field, 42.5 percent from beyond the arc and 89.2 percent at the foul line.
So yes, the Cavaliers waived McNeil. No, it wasn’t necessarily bad news. It was mostly paperwork completing a path back to the Charge.
