Given Cavs’ Cap Situation, Tristan Thompson Return Makes Sense

Don’t expect the Cavaliers to enter the regular season with just 13 players under standard NBA contracts. Eventually, they’ll add a 14th. They have to.

League rules require teams to carry at least 14 players, allowing only short-term exceptions — a maximum of 28 combined days per season under the minimum.

So yes, someone’s coming.

And when you consider the Cavs’ roster makeup, chemistry, financials and obvious needs, there’s really one option that checks every box: Tristan Thompson.

The 34-year-old center appeared in 40 games last season, averaging 1.7 points and 3.4 rebounds in a limited role. But it’s never been just about the numbers with Thompson. He’s a highly respected locker room leader.

Teammates lean on him. Darius Garland, in particular, loves him. And he’s one of the few remaining bridges to the franchise’s championship culture.

It’s also worth noting the Cavs are the only NBA team currently above the second tax apron, sitting a full $19.7 million over it. That translates to a steep bill, which is why the final roster spot will almost certainly go to someone on a veteran minimum deal.

They’ll look for a targeted signing — someone who fits and whom they trust. So running it back with Thompson may be the best and most logical move.

For the past two seasons, Thompson’s contract was only guaranteed until early January. I envision him back on a similar deal next year. He is currently an unrestricted free agent.

  1. JOSEPH ! YOU ARE SO CORRECT !!!!
Checks EVERY box ??? Sorry Sam.
    Breathes actual oxygen maybe.
I DO understand the money issue, but,,,,, to have a real chance,
How about, at least,,, someone TALL that can actually, pass and MOVE, play some real defense, rim protect, & BLOCK some shots ?

The REAL NEED: AND How about someone TALL who can absorb at least some of those 12 -(foul calls)-(pun intended), that Allen & Mobley will eventually pick up during excessively hard play in playoff games when the officials get crazy on those tricky-tack FOWL calls.
THEY NEED SOMEONE BETTER THAN A respected locker room cheerleader.

Kobe — Go out and DO your job. Get a REAL BIG reliever because that’s where the NEED IS ! Whole team suffers when either of the two big guys are sitting.
