The Cavaliers are waiving point guard Jacob Gilyard, who came to training camp on an Exhibit 10 contract.
Gilyard, 26, is 5-foot-9 and has played a total of 42 NBA games with the Nets and Spurs, averaging 4.2 points and 3.4 assists.
The Cavs recently acquired his G League returning player rights in a trade with the Memphis Hustle. He appeared in one preseason game and is now likely headed to the Cleveland Charge.
The Cavs return to preseason action on Wednesday with a road game against former coach J.B. Bickerstaff and the Pistons. Cleveland (0-2) has suffered two home losses in the preseason, first to the Bulls and then the Pacers.
Coach Kenny Atkinson suggested that the starters could see more minutes in the final two preseason games, both this week. They visit Chicago on Friday, before opening the regular season next week at Toronto.
Along with Gilyard, the Cavs will have some decisions to make on others near the end of the roster, including Pete Nance, former lottery pick Zhaire Smith and Jules Bernard. Each of those three players is also likely on their way to the Cleveland Charge of the G League.
An Exhibit 10 contract is a non-guaranteed minimum-salary deal. It doesn’t count toward a team’s cap unless the player makes the final roster. It also can be converted to a two-way deal before the season begins or mean guaranteed money if a player is waived and then stays on the G League club for at least 60 days.
