Cavs’ Donovan Mitchell Officially Ruled Out

Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell has been ruled out for Wednesday’s road game against the Grizzlies with a left groin strain.Donovan Mitchell Mike Conley

Mitchell did not practice Tuesday as a result of the injury, coach J.B. Bickerstaff told reporters. His status for weekend home games against the Warriors and Bucks remains up in the air.

Mitchell suffered the injury in Monday’s home win over the Pelicans and was forced to exit in the second half. Clearly hobbling a bit, he scored 11 points before making his way to the sideline, where he remained to cheer on his teammates.

Mitchell, 26, is leading the Cavs in scoring in his first year with the franchise, averaging a career-high 28.4 points on a career-high 48 percent shooting. He is also at a career-best 39 percent on 3-pointers.

Bickerstaff said immediately after Monday’s win he did not yet know the extent of Mitchell’s injury.

The Cavs (28-17) return home Friday to face the defending champion Warriors, followed by a home game against the Bucks — the 2021 champions — the following night.
