The Cavaliers struck out on free agent center Naz Reid, as relayed by Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports. Reid is returning to the Timberwolves on a new deal.
But that doesn’t mean president of basketball operations Koby Altman and the Cavs are giving up in free agency.
Per Hoops Wire sources, Cleveland is still seeking a significant upgrade when it comes to frontcourt help off the bench. The Cavs don’t have more than the mid-level exception to dangle, but believe they can find help anyway.
Along with a power forward or center, the Cavs would like to find scorers from the wing and backcourt spots. Preferably, that someone can shoot from the perimeter, as they have plenty of slashers, starting with star guard Donovan Mitchell. They are also expected to re-sign guard/forward Caris LeVert.
A low-level trade is something the Cavs might consider too — using the likes of wings Cedi Osman and Isaac Okoro as possible bait.
Of course, nothing is definite, as it’s all speculation at this point. And any trade conversations being had by Altman are said to be ongoing and very much up in the air. If there’s one thing we do know, it’s that Altman is never afraid to make a splash, just as he did last summer when sneaking in and swiping Mitchell from the Jazz.
For the Cavs, a top priority remains a powerful player near the basket to relieve and assist Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, as well as a reliable perimeter shooter from the wing.
They weren’t able to land Reid, but they are staying aggressive, including backup frontcourt players they’re not expected to land. It’s just the Altman way. After all, nobody thought Mitchell would be playing for the Cavs at this time last year.
So while there are no specific names, know this much: Altman and the Cavs are indeed aiming high for someone tall — and good.
