Cavs minority owner Myles Garrett reportedly traded to Rams

Myles Garrett’s ties to Cleveland extend beyond the Browns. They also include the Cavaliers.

That’s what makes Monday’s blockbuster NFL news a little more interesting from an NBA perspective.

According to multiple reports, the Browns are finalizing a trade that will send Garrett to the Rams in exchange for former Defensive Rookie of the Year Jared Verse, a first-round pick and additional draft compensation.

While Garrett built his reputation as one of the NFL’s premier defensive players, he’s also maintained a close connection to the Cavaliers over the years.

In 2023, Garrett purchased a minority ownership stake in the franchise and became an official team ambassador, joining an ownership group led by chairman Dan Gilbert.

Long before that, Garrett was frequently spotted courtside at Cavs games and often represented the organization at NBA events, including Summer League and All-Star Weekend.

At the time of the investment, Gilbert described Garrett as “a Cleveland icon” whose commitment to the community aligned with the organization’s vision.

Garrett called the opportunity to join the Cavs ownership group “a dream come true.”

Now, although his football career appears headed west, Garrett’s relationship with the Cavs is expected to remain intact through his ownership stake.

The trade marks the end of an era for Browns fans.

Garrett, a former No. 1 overall pick, spent nine seasons in Cleveland and developed into one of the most dominant defensive players of his generation. According to ESPN, the Rams remained persistent in their pursuit before finally landing the seven-time Pro Bowler in a deal that ranks among the largest defensive trades in NFL history.

His NFL future may be in Los Angeles. But by all accounts, Garrett will still have a piece of Cleveland through the Cavaliers.
