Cavs Remain Active in Quest to Add Another Piece

The Cavaliers have added several pieces via free agency and trades this summer, but they may not be done yet. Not if they have their way, anyway.Kelly Oubre

Per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, the Cavs have been active in looking to add another piece via free agency — or perhaps even sign-and-trade scenarios.

While it doesn’t seem real likely the Cavs will make any sort of splash, you just never know with president of basketball operations Koby Altman. The man has a history of making moves that warrant headlines.

Per Fedor, the Cavs have registered interest in unrestricted free agent small forward Kelly Oubre (Hornets) and center Christian Wood (Mavericks). Those are widely considered the two best remaining free agents on the market, and neither is returning to his former team.

So why not the Cavs?

Well, actually, it won’t be easy. The Cavs don’t want to be a taxpayer, so they have about $3.3 million to spend. They reportedly also have an interest in Hornets restricted free agent power forward P.J. Washington, and as Fedor noted, they may have enough expendable salary to interest Charlotte.

Then again, they probably don’t have the money Washington seeks. At least, not without going above the tax line. And it’s hard to envision Charlotte being interested in anything the Cavs have to offer.

In other words, Altman and the Cavs are sure to do what they also do and aim high. But the reality is that they will likely end up signing low. Or lower, anyway.

As Fedor wrote, the Cavs could wind up adding a “cheaper-than-expected” rotation player, just as the Warriors did with big man Dario Saric.

So far, of course, the Cavs have re-signed small forward Caris LeVert, traded for forward/guard Max Strus (Heat), and signed forward Georges Niang (76ers), guard Ty Jerome (Warriors) and center Damian Jones (Jazz).
