League sources tell The Athletic’s Sam Amick that the Cavaliers have explored the idea of trading veteran center Jarrett Allen, whose three-year, $90.7 million extension begins in 2026-27.

The thinking here is structural, not personal. Moving Allen could be a way to unlock much bigger possibilities, particularly as the Cavs look for ways to dip below the second tax apron.

Even after Sunday’s De’Andre Hunter deal with Sacramento, the Cavs remain roughly $14 million over that line this season.

Allen is a productive, respected piece. But financially, he is also one of the few contracts that could change the Cavs long-term flexibility in a meaningful way.

Ball Still Main Chip

Despite all the noise, multiple sources with knowledge of the Cavs’ thinking continue to insist that Lonzo Ball remains Cleveland’s top trade candidate this week.

Marc Stein and Jake Fischer of The Stein Line report that the Cavs have held preliminary talks with Charlotte that would result in Lonzo joining younger brother LaMelo Ball.

The Nets and Jazz have also been mentioned as teams willing to absorb unwanted salary, provided draft compensation is attached.

If Lonzo Ball is moved, it would almost certainly involve second-round picks going out with him.

The Cavs’ motivation here is clear. Dumping Ball’s $10 million contract would help push them closer to escaping the second apron and open up far more flexibility this summer.

Garland-Harden, Briefly

As covered extensively elsewhere on the site, the Cavs and Clippers have discussed a framework involving Darius Garland and James Harden.

The sticking point remains draft compensation. The Cavs are seeking a first-round pick or swap to move Garland. The Clippers have resisted.

Talks are ongoing but not advanced, and league-wide belief is growing that Garland could resurface as a summer trade candidate if nothing materializes this week.

Basically, the front office continues to listen. And clearly, the Cavs may not be done just yet.
