The Cavaliers are acquiring center Damian Jones in a trade with the Jazz, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Jones, 28, is 7-foot-0 and on an expiring $2.6 million contract. He appeared in 41 games with the Lakers and Jazz last season, averaging 3.5 points and 3.0 rebounds.
The Cavs aren’t sending anything back to the Jazz, but merely absorbing Jones’ contract. That can happen when a team is contemplating waiving a player. This way, the Cavs won’t have to wait for Jones to clear waivers.
Cleveland has been looking for a backup big man for Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley, and while a journeyman, Jones comes with some experience in the role.
Along with LA and Utah, he has spent time with the Warriors, Hawks, Suns and Kings.
This becomes the Cavs’ third move already in free agency, as they re-signed Caris LeVert (full post), signed former 76ers forward Georges Niang (full post) and acquired Max Strus in a three-team sign and trade involving the Heat (Amico column).
The Cavs aren’t expected to bring back free agent center Robin Lopez, sources told Hoops Wire.
