The Boston Celtics are signing NBA veteran big man Chris Boucher to a one-year, $3.3 million contract, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The deal follows Boston’s trade of Georges Niang to the Utah Jazz, which trimmed $50 million off their payroll and tax bill, according to Yossi Gozlan of The Third Apron. The move left the Celtics just $1.7 million over the first tax apron and created an $8.2 million trade exception. That cleared the path for Boucher.

Roc Nation Sports VP Sam Permut and Celtics executives worked to finalize the agreement, per HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto.

Boucher, 32, had spent all but one season of his NBA career with the Raptors and holds franchise bench records in points, rebounds, blocks, minutes and games played. He was also the last remaining member of Toronto’s 2019 title team.

He averaged 10.0 points and 5.4 rebounds across 50 games last season and is expected to play a significant role in a new-look Boston frontcourt.

The Celtics are far removed from their 2023 championship, undergoing big changes since. Kristaps Porzingis was traded to the Atlanta Hawks. Jrue Holiday is now a member of the Portland Trail Blazers. And star wing Jayson Tatum is expected to miss most or all of the upcoming season.

Boucher brings energy, experience and depth to a Boston team that’s reshuffling the deck while trying to stay in the playoff picture.
