Devin Carter’s opportunity with the Celtics will extend beyond training camp.
Boston is converting the guard’s Exhibit 10 contract to a two-way deal, according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. Carter fills the opening alongside Amari Williams and Dillon Mitchell, so no corresponding move is needed.
The 24-year-old made a strong first impression against the Cavaliers on Oct. 8, finishing with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists in 25 minutes. Boston outscored the Cavs by 22 with him on the floor.
An illness has limited his preseason opportunities since then, but the Celtics saw enough to keep working with him.
Carter was selected 13th overall by the Kings in 2024. Shoulder surgery delayed his debut until January 2025, and he never established a consistent rotation role with the Kings.
Across 74 games in two seasons, he averaged 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 14.8 minutes. Shooting was a problem, with Carter making 40.1 percent from the field and 27.4 percent from beyond the arc.
Sacramento sent him and a second-round pick to the Hawks in June to help get below the luxury-tax line. Atlanta waived him in September, opening the door for Boston.
His new contract will pay $678,882 and allow him to appear in up to 50 regular-season games.
In short, Carter’s first two seasons didn’t go as planned. The Celtics are giving him a chance to get the third one headed in a better direction.
