The Celtics may be looking to take a low-cost swing on a former lottery pick.
Specifically, Boston has expressed interest in signing guard Devin Carter once he clears waivers, according to Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.
The Hawks waived Carter on Friday, less than three months after acquiring him and a 2033 second-round pick from the Kings. Sacramento selected the former Providence standout with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
His NBA career has gotten off to a choppy start. Carter underwent shoulder surgery before his rookie season and dealt with ankle, back and calf issues during his second. He averaged 6.4 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 74 appearances for Sacramento, shooting 40.1 percent from the field and 27.4 percent on 3-pointers.
There were more encouraging signs late last season. Carter averaged 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists over his final 12 games while shooting 46.1 percent overall and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc.
So the appeal is fairly obvious. Carter is 24, knows New England and played considerably better once given consistent minutes.
The contract details would matter. Boston has 14 players on guaranteed standard deals and sits only about $1.7 million below the luxury-tax line. A minimum contract would carry a $2.45 million cap hit, though a non-guaranteed, partially guaranteed or two-way arrangement could offer more flexibility.
Interest doesn’t always become a signing. But as inexpensive reclamation projects go, Carter would be an interesting one.
